Each turn, the players will simultaneously command their cult's followers to attack, defend, breed or sacrifice themselves for the good of the cult. Attacking is done to hamper the progress of other cults, while defense helps prevent others from doing the same to you. Breeding will grow your ranks, while sacrificing your own followers will gain you the favor of your chosen deity. That is to say, you will gain victory points for doing so, as well as powerful action cards that can tip the scales in your favor. Sacrifice the most followers that turn, and you gain an extra card, which could prove essential in getting ahead.
